June 2020: Prayer Vigil
“Learn to do good. Seek justice. Help the oppressed. Defend the cause of orphans. Fight for the rights of widows.”
On June 5th, we gathered 25 churches and over 350 community members together to ask God to unify the Lake Highlands and Hamilton Park communities during a time of national unrest. More than ever we are asking for Jesus to lead us to love our neighbors well. We want to be the kind of community that when people look at us, they begin to see Him.
LEARN TO DO GOOD
We need humility now more than ever. Doing good is a process to grow in. We must learn in order to do good. Listening to our neighbors helps us move our intentions into actionable steps of kindness and love. We must humble ourselves for goodness sake and learn to do good.
SEEK JUSTICE
Justice is every wrong put to rights. Justice weighs the dignity of all peoples equally and indiscriminately. Jesus is justice personified. He is just and the justifier (Romans 3:26). As Jesus came to reconcile us to God through sacrifical love, God is calling us to supernaturally seek justice in this world, not for ourselves, but by laying our lives and comforts down on behalf of others (1 John 3:16).
HELP THE OPPRESSED
God has blessed us to be a blessing. If you have Jesus, you have a calling to be a reconciler. To be a peacemaker. We make peace by considering the interests of our neighbors before our own (Philippians 2:3). We pray for their flourishing. We see their children as our children.
DEFEND THE CAUSE OF ORPHANS
God believes in our boys. Their dreams and aspirations have a God-given purpose for us to discover and cultivate. God has set His people apart for this very purpose. We will defend their potential, call out their gifts, and strengthen their resolve as they grow up into men of God.
FIGHT FOR THE RIGHTS OF WIDOWS
Psalm 68:5 says, “A Father to the fatherless, a defender of widows, is God in his holy dwelling.” As we advocate for single moms, mentor their boys, and support their families we will find ourselves fighting alongside God and not against Him.
It is an honor and a joy to respond to God’s word as a community. Join me in praying this passage as we all learn to live it out in Lake Highlands and Hamilton Park for His glory.
