Inheritance

“My name is Glenda. I heard of Forerunner when I worked with Sara Garza at Anthropologie. She was engaged to a guy named Zach Garza and he was involved with a group named Forerunner. I decided to get involved with Forerunner monetarily when I found out that she and Zach were going to invite a young man into their home and be a guardian to him since his mother was a truck driver and was away from home most of the time. I was so impressed that newlyweds would take on this responsibility. That commitment gave me confidence that Forerunner was the real deal. In time, God let me know that this was not enough and I needed to get involved personally so I started to tutor.

I have been out of school for 50 years so I was intimidated by the word "tutor". I have thought of quitting several times but God has made it clear that I should be with Forerunner. I have been so blessed to be a part of this organization.

I decided to get a little more involved this past year, so I started to go to the events they have for the moms each month. I have so much respect and empathy for these mothers. They want the best for their kids and they are having to do it as single moms. I have so enjoyed getting to know these ladies and spending time with them and other volunteers. I have also enjoyed getting to know the staff and daily volunteers at Forerunner. The coaches truly love the boys and when you see them interact with them, you can certainly tell that they do.

It is so rewarding and fun to be a tutor. If you are considering volunteering, don't let the title "tutor" intimidate you. You will be there mostly for moral support and to form a relationship with them and just be their friend and to let them know they are your friend too. The thing I like most about Forerunner is the teaching the young men get about being a man of God. That is the most important thing that happens to these boys. I am there and hear all the boys say at the top of their voices "I am a man of God" as they recite their Manhood Declaration over themselves and each other every day.

I want to thank Forerunner for letting me be a part of this organization. From the boys, the moms, the coaches, the supporting staff, the other volunteers, and the leadership of Forerunner. I have found them to be loving, Spirit-filled people, and I am proud to serve God in this way.”

“THE THING I LIKE THE MOST ABOUT FORERUNNER IS THE TEACHING THE YOUNG MEN GET ABOUT BEING A MAN OF GOD.”

Inheritance. Glenda is just one of many who will have an inheritance in years to come from what our young men are experiencing: a fulfilled potential. Building relationships with young men in Lake Highlands not only births life in them, but it rubs off on us. Pouring into others not only makes them better. It helps you recognize the potential you carry and the knowledge you have. All you have to do is show up.

Thank you for being a community that shows up and calls these young men friends. The relationships you form in our programs are like the roots of a tree going deep; the fruit will be too numerous to count in years to come for the glory of God.
