March 2020: The Next Steve Harvey
When you are with a child, you never know what the Lord is going to do with their life. In our program right now, we very well may have the next Mozart, Picasso, or Steve Harvey. Yes, I said Steve Harvey. That guy is awesome.
But would you associate music with Mozart if no one ever introduced him to a piano? What about if no one ever taught Picasso how to hold a paint brush? Would Steve Harvey be famous if someone didn’t tell him “Hey Steve. I think you are really good at making people smile and laugh.”?
We believe in exposing our Forerunners to as many different opportunities as possible because you never know what platform the Lord is going to give our kids.
Here’s a story from last week:
“At church last week Ty was interested in my camera, so I showed him how to use it.
How to focus and frame on certain subjects
How to adjust the tripod height, and level the camera
How to set the aperture for lighting
How to take care of it and treat it with respect
I asked him at program today, “Tyree, do you remember what you learned at church? I need help shooting a video of all the Forerunners saying the manhood declaration.”
He said, “Of course I remember. Here, give me the camera. I will take care of it.”
He selected Forerunners, set them up in the shot, pulled focus, gave instructions on smiling, coached them on their words by sounding it out for them. He shot retakes if he didn’t think it sounded right.
It was fun to watch him copy everything I would do and say. He naturally followed my lead and became a videographer in one day. He was so hungry to learn something new.
Ty noticed that Ryan was interested in being a part. So he showed him how the microphone works, how to set it up on the other Forerunners. He showed him how to pull focus…He started teaching him everything he knew.
And then it hit me: Ty told me when he first came to Forerunner that his dream is to become a YouTuber. But he had never used a camera like this before. He had never shot, directed, or cast his own film. But now he has.
Maybe today is the beginning of a lifelong passion. Maybe it’s not. You never know what experiences will unlock doors and dreams in the lives of our boys. But by simply being a part of Forerunner, our boys are learning things they’ve always dreamed of knowing, that they might not have had the opportunity to experience otherwise.”
Thank you for your prayers and support.
Our ministry is opening doors for our Forerunners. To experiences. To relationships. To father-figures. To Jesus. For that, thank you. Keep giving us the key to unlock potential in our young men.
Here’s to the Lord using Ty to influence the world through his passion for video. Here’s to him becoming the next Steve Harvey. Here’s to more!
